The CTTC is the most recent iteration of a history of excellence in chemical and biological defence research dating back to WW2. Canadian and British military formed the first defence research lab at Suffield in 1941. At that time the focus was on developing effective means for the defence against and offensive use of chemical weapons; as such, Canada's first chemical weapons school started here that same year.
Following WW2 the Suffield experimental research station focused on defensive means to counter the growing cold war threat.
As the 1970s and 80s unfolded, the need to destroy the large stockpiles of chemical weapons left over from WW2 became pressing. Again Suffield was called upon to use their scientific expertise to determine safe methods for destroying these agents.
Today, the CTTC continues to support these demilitarization efforts by researching, discovering, and destroying legacy storage sites.
