Government of Canada
Training at CTTC
Background

DRDC Suffield's Counter Terrorism Technology Centre is a key component of Canada's ability to respond to domestic and international chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) events.

With the support of other government departments, the mandate of the CTTC is to:
  • Train civilian and military personnel to respond to a CBRNE event
  • Test and evaluate the equipment they require
  • Provide forensic sample analysis support
  • Provide demilitarization expertise to the government of Canada

Live Agent Training (LAT)

The CTTC is unique in North America in its ability to provide large-scale, collective training using live chemicals (mustard/nerve/toxic industrial chemicals), biological simulants and open & closed radiological sources in high fidelity scenarios.

Scenarios are designed to meet the needs of each individual group and can include: a terrorist cave, subway platform, post office, clandestine labs, and a rubble pile. These scenarios and agents instill confidence in each team member's ability to perform:
  • Sampling and identification
  • Casualty handling
  • Decontamination and;
  • Command/control in the hot zone

Personnel test equipment, personal protection and evaluate their tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP';s) prior to declaring themselves operationally ready.

DRDC Suffield hosts a progression of national and international military and civilian groups each year. Each receives advanced briefings, lab and field exercises designed to build CBRNE skills and knowledge.

First Responders Training Program (FRTP)

The CTTC provides CBRNE expert support to the Federal Government's First Responder Training Program as well as offering the advanced level of training in Suffield. First Responders must complete the intermediate level of this program at the Canadian Emergency Preparedness College in Ottawa prior to arrival at Suffield. A parallel program is also available for International First Responders Groups through Foreign Affairs Canada.

This program builds on existing First Responder skill sets and provides the skills to work in a CBRNE event safely. First Responders are drawn from across Canada for the advanced level and ad-hoc teams involving members from each of the four disciplines (fire, hazardous materials, police, EMS) are brought together to practice the all-hazards approach to a CBRNE event.

First Responders must prepare for a worst-case scenario. Having the knowledge and the confidence to properly secure the scene, detect the presence of hazards, safely remove and decontaminate casualties and contain contamination without harming themselves or others is crucial.

Training at DRDC Suffield's Counter Terrorism Technology Centre provides responders instant access to over 60 years of research and development expertise in the CBRNE realm. Responders will gain confidence in their equipment, tactics, technology and procedures which in turn ensures they can respond effectively and safely to any CBRNE threat.
