Dr. Paul Lundy, former defence scientist at DRDC Suffield, recently received the Clarence A. Broomfield Award during the US Army Medical Defense Bioscience Review in early June. This biennial award is presented to a scientist who is deemed to have made significant career advances in the research and development of medical chemical defence. Dr. Lundy retired from DRDC in 2005.

Dr. Lundy career at DRDC started in 1974 at DRDC Suffield. His resarch focused on molecular neuropharmacology, the use of classical pharmacology for the study of the autonomic nervous system and cardiovascular pharmacology. He was involved in the development of treatments for nerve agent poisoning and participated in the development of a fully physiologically instrumented, anesthetized pig model. This model evaluates the possible interactions of nerve agents with anesthetic agents in casualties that may have both traumatic injury and chemical agent exposure. Currently, it is being used for the training of first responders in the handling and surgical treatment of chemically-contaminated casualties.
