Canadian research in defence against chemical and biological warfare (CB)
agents continue to provide the Canadian Forces with defensive equipment that
is among the best in the world. Over the years, DRE Suffield has generated
a considerable, unmatched reservoir of knowledge - not only of CB agents,
their toxicology and infectivity, but of the behavior of liquids, gases and
aerosols released in the atmosphere. Information developed by and available
at DRE Suffield is of great value to environmentalists, meteorologists, public
health authorities and industrial chemists, as well as the Canadian Forces.
CB warfare continues to pose an ever present danger to the Canadian Forces
in their worldwide peacekeeping assignments. In the Gulf War, DRDC Suffield
deployed CB defence equipment for the Canadian Forces. An antidote for nerve
agent (HI-6), a skin decontaminant (RSD), a CB agent sampling kit and detectors
for CB agents were all direct applications of ongoing research projects.
